Urban expansion in Brazil has occurred in parallel with quick structural changes in Brazil’s economy and society, and the Southeast is the most affected region. Swift economic growth, on the one hand, made the Southeast the region with the largest percentage of the country’s GDP. However, on the other, it left scars on the urbanization process, among them the sprawling growth of suburbs and serious shortcomings in public and social infrastructure services. The portfolio of the Social Infrastructure Division shows that, over the last few years, the BNDES has financed important investments in urban mobility, sanitation, health, education and security, as well as to improve public administration in the region. These investments represent an initial cycle and should be intensified over the ensuing years, mainly in urban mobility, where bottlenecks reveal the need for considerable investments

Radiological Consequences Modelling for a Land Based Operations Environment

Radiological Dispersive Devices (RDD) are often portrayed as weapons used by radical (asymmetric) forces, however they can also be used in a regular war. In this study, a hypothetical scenario where an asymmetric force contaminates the battlefield, by detonating an RDD prior to the soldier’s arrival without being detected, is simulated. The software HotSpot was used due to its speed and conservative results which can help inform the decisions made by the commanding officers. HotSpot performs a Gaussian simulation of the radioactive dispersion in the environment. The plumes that arise from the explosion are considered to be affected by the atmospheric conditions. In this study, those conditions are represented by the Pasquill-Gifford stability classes. The results of the simulation show that remaining stationary, if the contaminated area size is not affected by the PG class variation, may increase the radiological risk. It is better to move the soldiers around in order to avoid additional exposure, however that may also be a challenge for various reasons including changes in the shape of the contaminated area. Nevertheless, the variations in local PG classes gain importance as the distance from the release point increases

Human and Environmental Bias Affecting Risk Perception in Military Radiological and Nuclear Operations

The urban military operating environment may offer favorable conditions for combat involving asymmetric actions or 4th generation warfare which includes the chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) environment. The CBRN environment is characterized by threats and hazards capable of producing negative impacts to the operations. The detriment may be produced by intentional release of hazardous materials into the operational environment. This study deals with an environment deliberately contaminated by radioactive materials because of the activation of a radiological dispersive device (RDD). A computer simulation of the radioactive scenario was performed in order to produce useful information which in turn can be used to support decision-making. The main goal was to assess the risk of developing radio-induced solid cancer by studying the articulation between local environmental variables and a cognitive bias, the Dunning-Kruger effect. The findings highlight intuitive correlations between local atmospheric stability and cognitive bias affecting the threat level (radiation dose), the responsiveness and the perceived risk. The findings also allow us to infer that, especially in the military-operational context, the methodology proposed for the assessment of environment-human interactions may be decisive for correctly direct available resources, both human and material, reducing operational risk

This paper presents some aspects of the operations carried out by the Social Infrastructure Division of the BNDES in the Central-West Region over the last decade. Besides analyzing the progress of disbursements, it aims to assess, qualitatively, the most important interventions and the impact of investment made in the region.

Even with socio-economic indicators well above the national average, the South region requires investments to improve its public services. Within this context, support from the BNDES’ Social Infrastructure Division (AS) is essential for projects in education, health, sanitation, security, highway infrastructure and urban mobility in the region, especially through financing for state governments that provide such public services

A study on friendship as educational strategy: its meaning by medical students

Objective: To diagnose Friendship as a teaching device. Methods: Exploratory and descriptive qualitative study. Main question: What does Friendship mean and a friendly teacher? Results: Psychosomatic Medicine classroom, 2015/2nd Semester; 16 white students of 6th, 7th and 8th semesters of medical school; two at 2nd graduation; 12 female/4 male; mean age 25 years; most have two siblings; from Southeast and one from Midwest; three were married; two had children. Friendship as a feature of human essence, a communication of the sensitive body. They think teacher as someone fulfilling their will. Conclusion: Educational activities in education, training and health actions should include feeling and will of students. The teachers need to acquire teaching skills of human spirituality

Objective: Production of ideas from incentive to imagination that may indicate troubleshooting identified by nursing students and presenting ideas and potential products resulting from their imagination. Method: Carthografic qualitative. The institutional research scenario is a public university in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Sixteen Nursing students were part of this study. Results: Twelve images were produced by Nursing students (73,4%), while only four students (26,6%) did not elaborate any image. The produced data came from three moments: "tracking to play", "playing to land" and "landing to reconize". Conclusion: There were identified problems resulting from experience with the families, to the creation of ideas into products or procedures involving innovations soft-hard technologies and building applications, tablets for hospitalized clients
